Los Nr. 194

A page taken from the Perkins Bacon printer's record book, measuring 200 x 315 mm, each side of the page affixed with imperforate colour trial proofs from Great Britain, New South Wales and Trinidad: the first side with Great Britain 1840 1d 'Rainbow' trials in rose-red, pale red-brown, bright blue-green and two different shades of blue; New South Wales Diadem lower value type trials (the ”postage” and value tablets blank) in reddish purple, rose-pink and yellow orange and diadem Sixpence trial in deep brown; Trinidad 1859 6d. deep green trial. The other side of the page with New South Wales Diadem lower value type trials (the ”postage” and value tablets blank) in brown-orange, dull brown, dull violett and blue, Diadem Sixpence trials in deep blue, dull carmine, bright green, deep violet-blue and orange; all of the proofs (except the Trinidad 6d) with one corner 'waxed' over leaving the area blank, each annoted alongsidewith the exact weights of the various dyes used to produce each colour, the margins vary with a few just cut-into or clipped in places, two are slightly defective and one split page fold in no way detracting from this unique and extraordinary document. The purpose of this arrangement is unclear though it seems likely, especially given the inclusion of the 'Rainbow' trials which were printed some twenty years before, that this page was produced as possible colour standards for a forthcoming issue of another colony. The Trinidad 6d. is a major rarity in itself - the unused issued stamp is catalogued at GPF 12,000 by Stanley Gibbons. (MS)
