1862, Thomas Jefferson, 5 C. brown of the 1861 ff. issue as partial franking of a transatlantic letter from New York to Amsterdam. The stamp is delicately cancelled with a red ”Grid” cancel and was valid for postage from New York to Boston. According to the routing note ”Pr. Str. America - Per open mail via Ostend (Ostend)”, thus via the England route, accordingly handwritten tax note on front. Blue London transit cancel and red AK Amsterdam on reverse. Unusual cover in fine condition with photo certificate of the Philatelic Foundation, New York (2005).

Die Marke ist zart mit einem roten ”Grid”-Stempel entwertet und galt für das Porto von New York nach Boston. Laut Leitvermerk ”Pr. Str. America - Per open mail via Ostend (Ostende)”, damit über die Englandroute, entsprechend hs. Taxvermerk auf Vorderseite. Rückseitig blauer Londoner Transitstempel und roter AK Amsterdam.
