Lot No. 1221

1948, letter bearing two 2½d. blue (one stamp faulty) from ”LONDON 21 DEC 1948” addressed to the Post Office, Mashall Islands, on front violet 2line ”RETURNED TO SENDER / SERVICE INTERRUPTED” and boxed ”UNDELIVERED FOR REASON STATED / RETURN TO SENDER”, backstamped London 14.10.1949 (which is almost a ten month's journey). The Marshall Islands were captured by the USA from the Japanese in 1944. In 1947 the archipelago was put into the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. From 1946 to 1958 the island were the site of the US Pacific Proving Grounds and 66 nuclear devices were tested in that period. This is probably the reason for the return of this item.
