1950, printed matter envelope from ”HESWILL HILL CHESHIRE 14 JA 50” bearing KGVI 1d. and postage due 1d., addressed to Shanghai with boxed ”SERVICE SUSPENDED / RETURN TO SENDER”. This item was still affected by the consequences of the disruption caused by the war between Nationalist and Communist forces in China 1949/1950. The PRC was proclaimed at Peking on 21 Sep 1949. The Post Office Circular 16 Oct 1949 stated that normal postal services were only available to Formosa and Hainan Island. Unregistered letters and postcards could be sent to Kwangai, Kweichow, Sikang, Szechwan and Yunnan and by air and surface routes to the rest of China at the sender's risk. This item was printed matter which was not allowed to pass in the post of China. (T)
