INCOMING MAIL FROM GERMANY: 1872, Large Eagle Shield ½gr. orange, 4x1gr. red and 2x2gr. blue on lettersheet from ”DÜSSELDORF 2.11.74” to Beyrouth/Syria, ROUTED VIA MARSEILLE, ONLY FOUR PIECES KNOWN! Entire bearing 8½gr. franking (½gr. more than necessary), from ”DÜSSELDORF 2.11.74” and blue French receiver ”ALLEMAGNE PAR PARIS 4 NOV 74” via Marseille (!) to Beyrouth/Syria, with ms. marking ”80cm” (French postage 80 centimes) and arrival mark ”BEYROUTH 18 NOV 74” on reverse. Lettersheet and adhesives showing some faults, which appears to be neglectable due to the rareness of this entire. The Eagle Shield study group reports only four entires routed via Marseille. The common way via Triest (Austria) did cost only 6gr., 2gr. less than the 8gr. via France. The German-French Postal Agreement from 15.5.1872 defined the French part of postage for letters up to 10 grams by French steamer to 6½gr. resp. 80c. to all destinations. ONLY FOUR EAGLE SHIELD LETTERS TO BEYROUTH ROUTED VIA MARSEILLE ARE KNOWN!

1872, Grosser Schild ½ Gr. orange, 4x1 Gr. rot und 2x2 Gr. blau auf Brief mit K1 ”DÜSSELDORF 2 11 74” nach Beirut, Syrien, MIT LAUFWEG ÜBER MARSEILLE NUR VIER BELEGE BEKANNT ! -Ein Faltbrief mit insgesamt 8 ½ Groschen frankiert (um ½ Groschen überfrankiert), gelaufen mit K1 ”DÜSSELDORF 2 11 74” und blauem franz. Grenz-K1 ”ALLEMAGNE PAR PARIS 4 NOV 74” via Marseille(!) nach Beyrouth, Syrie mit hds. ”80 cm” (französische Porto-Anteil 80 Centimes) und rs. Ankufts-K2 ”BEYROUTH 18 NOV 74” Der Brief hat oben Tesafilm-Klebespuren und drei Marken sind beschädigt, aber das sollte Angesichts der Seltenheit zweitrangig sein. Der ARGE Brustschild sind nur vier Belege mit Laufweg über Marseille bekannt. Der normale Laufweg war über Triest (Österreich) mit 6 Groschen auch billiger als mit 8 Groschen über Frankreich. Seit dem Deutsch-Französischen Postvetrag von 15.5.1872 betrug der französische Portoaneil bis 10 Gramm innerhalb der franz. Schiffs-Linien 6½ Groschen bzw. 80 Centimes nach allen Bestimmungsländern. -ES GIBT NUR VIER BEKANNTE BRUSTSCHILD-BRIEFE NACH BEIRUT MIT LAUFWEG MARSEILLE, EIN SEHR SELTENER ÜBERSEE-BELEG FÜR DIE GROSSE SAMMLUNG!

1921, Aïn-Tab issue, black overprint, 1pi. on 10pa. on 20pa. carmine, horiz. strip of three with different positions of surcharge, fresh colour, normally perforated, unmounted mint, signed Calves (right stamp showing a very faint indication of toning at base). This issue was authorised by the District Governor of Aïn-Tab for mail to Aleppo and locally and was in use until 27 August 1921. Though Aïn-Tab (now Gaziantep) lay in Cilicia, 20 miles north of the Syrian border, in an area where French troops were fighting the Turkish Nationalists, the stamps were overprinted 'Syrie'. MAJOR RARITY OF SYRIA, ISSUED IN LOW QUANTITY OF 3500 STAMPS ONLY (both surcharges counted), especially valuable as a unit! Maury gives no price for u/m, estimated to 800,- €++.
