Los Nr. 412

1890: Two chromolithograph PENNY POSTAGE JUBILEE CHRISTMAS CARDS and decorated with cartouche imagery to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Penny Postage, depicting Guildhall, the General Post Office and portraits of Queen Victoria, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Sir Rowland Hill. The post office issued this Christmas card marking 50 years since the introduction of the Uniform Penny Post and was advertised in the post office circulars from which it could be ordered at 2 Shillings 6d each. One of them is the VERY SCARCE FORGERY manufactured by Thomas Bray in the late 1970s. He was tracked down and on searching his premises they found that around 200 had been sold. The forgery shows distinct black specks around the flagstaff which do not appear on the original. They are far scarcer than the originals. (T)
