Los Nr. 254

1875-79, U.S newspaper stamp 48$ FIVE DIFFERENT COLOUR DIE PROOFS of the facsimiles produced by the famous German stamp dealers SENF BROTHERS with the word ”falsch” at lower right of the pedestal. Date stamp in purple 6, 7, 9 May 1938 and one manuscript date 10.5.1938 further to manuscript annotations. These proofs were produced end of the XIX century. The 1938 datestamp, just before the start of WW II, was most likely an inventory marking and not a date of production as in 1938 both brothers were in their late 80s, Louis Senf died in 1940 at the age of 87, his Brother Richard in 1941 aged 85. The Senf Bros. made excellent high quality steel engraved reproductions of the US Newspaper stamps included in their Illustrierten Briefmarken Journal, as ”Kunst-Beigaben” (Artistic gifts). These reproductions were also sold directly to collectors. The U.S newpaper stamps are said to have been made in Germany before the turn of the century to meet the demand for these high face value stamps. DIE PROOFS OF THESE FORGERIES ARE EXTREMELY RARE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE.
