1870, BALLON MONTÉ: RARE ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE MAIL INTO PARIS FROM GREAT BRITAIN. Entire letter on thin paper written in french from „LONDON 3 novembre 1870“ franked with a GB 3d (not cancelled, SG 103 plate 5 = 525 GBP) addressed to a Levi family member in Paris (with interesting contents about the possibility to leave Paris and plans how to build up a textile business in London by hiring french workers who have fled the capital, the british workers not being very good). The smuggling was unsuccessful the letter was finally posted from „LILLE 23 FEVR 71“ (Nord = 57) to Paris after the siege with 30 centimes postage due and „PARIS 26 FEVR 71“ arrival backstamp. Very fine.
